I would personally highly recommend a group boat trip from Lombok to the Komodo islands. It was some of the best money I've ever spent. This is more for solo & small group travelers who want to meet other people as they go. This is dry season, which is the best for hiking and Komodo sightings.

Cannes Film Festival, France

ONLY TIME

May 15 to May 26

The 77th year of the festival will host over 30,000 industry professionals and a few thousand journalists as well. I couldn't find that many activities for the general public other than some showings on the beach, but could still be cool to go while they're all there.

CHEAPEST TIME

Apr 01 to Jun 30

At the tail end of the hot summer (113°F, 45°C) and the beginning of rainy season, you are really rolling your dice here, BUT you will find way less tourists around and cheaper accommodations. This is only for the most extreme frugal travelers.

A bucket list item for many worldly travelers. The pictures are insane, and I've heard enough stories of grandeur that I am now 'many worldly travelers'. For ~$150 on the cheap side you can get in the sky, be part of the show, and look down at the otherworldly landscape. The spring (Apr-Jun) is great for weather and avoiding tourist crowds, but if you want to see the most balloons, you actually have to go in summer.
